Jordan Withrow has made history as she pitched her second career no-hitter in the first game of the series against UT Permian Basin on Friday, April 5.
“Jordan is a workhorse for our team,” Head Coach Mark Cumpian said. “She is one of the best pitchers in the country and has really done a great job of being a leader for our team.”
The junior pitcher from Trenton, TX, had a performance for the books and becomes, along with Heather Russell, the only player with multiple career no-hitters.
“She had surgery after last season and was very limited in the fall, but she has come on this season and has been a big reason for our team success,” Cumpian added.
During her sophomore year, among many honors, Withrow was named the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Year, received All-LSC First Team honors, made the academic All-LSC team, and she was chosen LSC Pitcher of the Week four times; she also earned the FastpitchNews.com Honorable Mention All-American award.
“Jordan is one of the best players that I have had the opportunity to coach,” Cumpian said.
Withrow had to face some difficulties before achieving her second career no-hitter. Due to the weather, the Lone Star Conference sent the first series game into halted status.
The Texans were up 8-0 and Withrow was just three outsaway from a historical performance.
Over 17 hours later, the game got restarted and Withrow completed her phenomenal performance by striking out two more Falcon hitters. She fanned ten, walked five, and hit two Falcon batters over six innings of work.
“It is an exciting achievement that I couldn’t have accomplished without my teammates making plays behind me,” Withrow said. “Personal achievements are a great honor but it means nothing without the team’s success.”
Led by Withrow, Tarleton softball swept UTPB, keeping the Falcons off the board in all three games of the series (8-0, 6-0,7-0), and reached the 30th of the season.
“The goal this season is to continue to build and get better than the year before,” Withrow added. “We have really locked in recently on taking it one game at a time and one pitch at a time.”
This is the third straight season that the Texans have earned 30 victories under head coach Mark Cumpian.
“It is very difficult to sustain the amount of success we have had over the last three years. The players have created a championship culture and understand the expectations of Tarleton Softball,” Cumpian said.
Tarleton softball will be back in action at home on April 12-13 for a new Lone Star Conference series against the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions.
