Texan Golf drops to No. 18 in the second NCAA regional poll

Texan Golf dropped from No. 12 in the first NCAAWomen’s Division II West Regional Rankings to No. 18, which could potentially leave them out of the NCAA Regional tournament at the Amarillo Country Club on May 6-8.

“Golf is all mental,” junior Casey Leatherman said. “You can hit balls for hours every day but at the end of the day when it comes to competition it’s a whole different setting than practice. It’s very frustrating but we have to be positive.”

Only the first 12 teams from the super region are qualified to compete and the top six individuals from non-qualifying teams participate in the tournament as well. The Texans still have a chance to play as they fight to defend the Lone Star Conference Championship title.

“Our goal is to win the LSC Tournament and qualify forregionals”, Leatherman said. “We have the talent on the team, it’s just more of a mental barrier that we have to get over with.”

The golf team has been very successful in the past editions of the NCAA Regional Tournament. Tarletonhas qualified 11 times out of 12 and has won 9—settinga new LSC record.

“This season the team is very young,” she said. “We graduated two seniors last year who were great leaders. We’re going throughout a learning process.”

The Tarleton golf team will be back in action on April 22-23 to dispute the Lone Star Conference Championships at the Diamondback Golf Course in Abilene, TX. This will be the last tournament before Regionals.
