Alicia Barbaroux named LSC Player of the Year, TexAnns finish season

Updated: Mar 4, 2019

Tennis season has come to an end for the Tarleton State University TexAnns, after falling against the Cameron Mustangs in the second round of the Lone Star Conference Championship.

“It was very hard. Our goal was making it to Regionals. I’m disappointed,” sophomore Alicia Barbaroux said.

Earlier that day, Tarleton defeated the University of Texas Permian Basin Falcons 5-2 in the first round.

“It was a tough game,” freshman Sherine Salem said. “We started down in doubles but we fought hard to come back and win the individual matches.”

Tarleton started off the second round by losing all three doubles matches and the Mustangs secured two victories in individuals to complete the 5-0 win.

“I think this time they were better than us,” Barbaroux said. “It’s frustrating because we didn’t even get to finish all the individual matches,” Barbaroux added.

Despite the loss, Barbaroux was named LCS Player of the Year and recognized in all-conference in singles and doubles.

“I think it’s a great achievement for me,” Barbaroux said. “I’m also really happy and proud about my accomplishments this season.”

Barbaroux led the team in the No.1 line-up this season. She remained undefeated in conference matches (6-0), and she defeated three nationally-ranked opponents. She is currently ranked as the No. 32 player in the nation.

“I have worked very hard during this season and I have grown a lot as a player,” she said.

Barbaroux and her doubles partner Salem earned all-conference doubles recognition. They ended with a 4-2 record in conference and 13-6 overall in the No. 1 spot this season.

“We didn’t expect to play together because we are both left-handed,” Salem said. “We know each other very well on and off the court and I think that is what makes us a good doubles team,” Salem said.

Freshman Neetika Sud also received all-conference singles recognition. She played in the No. 2 spot for the

TexAnns’ line-up this season and finished with a 13-5 overall record.

The TexAnns finished the 2017-2018 season with a 10-9 record and will return in the fall.
